Can Vision Therapy Correct Strabismus?

October 15, 2022

If you have a child affected by strabismus, you know how heart-breaking it can be to see them struggle in most every area of their life. And while there are a range of treatments for strabismus, vision therapy offers an alternative treatment approach that treats the root of the problem.

Read on as an Oxnard, CA optometrist talks about strabismus and how vision therapy can help.

What Causes Strabismus?

Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes, is a condition in which one or both eyes are not aligned with each other. It can be caused by a number of things, such as a brain injury, infection, birth defect, or stroke. Strabismus can also be congenital (inherited) or acquired later in life.

A person who suffers from strabismus may have difficulty seeing out of one or both eyes. This can cause problems with depth perception and depth perception can affect balance and posture.

The Far-Reaching Effects of Eye Misalignment

Eye misalignment is a condition in which the eyes are not properly aligned with each other. The degree of rotation, tilt, or turn may be large or small, but almost all people with eye misalignment have some degree of impaired vision.

The effects of eye misalignment can impact many areas of your child’s life, including:

  • Difficulty with schoolwork. Children with strabismus may have difficulty reading, writing, and doing math problems because they’re unable to see things clearly.
  • Poor performance in sports or dance class. Eye misalignment affects your child’s eye-hand coordination, which naturally affects his or her ability to excel at sports.
  • Self-consciousness about appearance and social interaction.

Can Vision Therapy Help Correct Strabismus?

Vision therapy is a treatment for strabismus that uses eye exercises to help correct eye alignment. It works by helping your child’s eyes learn how to work together correctly.

Vision therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses special lenses and activities to help the brain process visual information correctly. It uses different techniques to help both eyes work together as a team while improving their ability to focus on objects from different distances. This helps the brain learn how to process visual information correctly so that it can send signals to both eyes at once and make them work together.

The therapy is usually done in an office with an eye doctor or therapist who will monitor your progress throughout the course of treatment. It usually takes about 6 months for your eyesight to improve after you’ve started therapy, but there are some cases where it may take longer depending on how severe your condition is.
